Many Speakers in One
Des and young people: Experience of an inner-city upbringing, and a period behind bars for driving offences, makes Des the ideal speaker to relate to today’s youth. He knows how a lack of role models, aspirations and motivation can leave a generation clinging to the wrong values. Now with a prosperous career and a young family behind him, he speaks to many youngsters whose lives balance on the edge and in turn is listened to with respect. Having been ‘inside’ makes him the best remedy for those clinging to the outside.
Des and enterprise: It takes guts to start again in your late teens but Des was apprenticed as an engineer and then went on to follow his acting dream by training at the Guildford School of Acting and becoming a West End Star in shows like Miss Saigon Chicago and Rent as well as appearing in many TV shows and films. Having been in front of and behind the camera Des now works as a freelance for the BBC both regionally and nationally.
‘Drama gives one a spirit of independence and self reliance; it enhances communicative and interactive skills enabling us to compete in all areas of life.’ Des Coleman.
Des and overcoming adversity: Facing death is something that most cannot comprehend but in 1998 this became a reality as Des was diagnosed with a rare form of Non Hodgkinson’s Lymphoma. After the initial operation and radiotherapy the cancer returned and Des was given 18 months to live if more invasive treatments proved unsuccessful. This was his darkest hour. That was 10 years ago. Since then Des has shared time with many whose illness is untreatable.
Des and motivating managers: 15 years in the acting profession has taken Des all over the world providing him with a unique perspective on the most effective ways to stimulate, motivate and create. During his varied career, Des has observed how people manage both themselves and their organisations. He knows that art, the theatre and acting can teach a great deal about who we are and why we behave as we do. Des talks to business and charitable organisations to inspire and motivate employees to manage themselves and those around them more effectively.
‘Those who have interactive skills will outperform those who have not; a global culture demands communicative skills from companies and individuals alike.’ Des Coleman.
Des and charity: Having travelled to Ghana with Oxfam to learn about Fair trade and establish fresh water wells, Des toured the UK speaking to politicians and students about Fair Trade. His involvement with charities include Great Ormond Street, Scope and Debra arranging celebrity Football, Cricket and Basketball matches, conducting auctions/raffles as well as speaking at universities, exhibitions and corporate events around the country.
